So, a few weeks ago, I notice that my signature images on various forums are no longer working. Great... I go look, and lo and behold, my whole site is down. Even more great!
It turns out that 1and1's (my webhosting company) server decided life wasn't worth living any longer. I guess it realized that serving up this great site was just too much of a burden, or something like that. Anyway, the server died, taking all of my data with it. Because this site uses a database that lives on the server to power it, all of the site's content was gone too, so I couldn't just restore it either.
So I sat around wringing my hands for a while thinking "whatever will I do?". 1and1 emailed me to tell me that they were working on retrieving a backup, but it may take a week. Great news, right? Well, a few weeks later, I still haven't seen my site come back up, so I email them back. At first I was told that they only keep backups for 24 hours, but then I explained my situation, and I guess they forwarded me on to the right people, because they got my data back.
A few minutes of resetting the permissions, and we're back in business.
